LTFS (Linear Tape File System) & LTO-5

1. Seriously first of all, Huge space 1.6 TB Native & 3.2 TB compressed for LTO-5. This is awesome. I mean now we can overnight 3TB worth of information anywhere in the world which is pretty much faster than transferring 3TB data through WAN segment.
2. LTFS (Linear tape File system) is introduced for the first time. There was the time when we converted Disk to Tape. No it is hot fuzz to convert Tape to the disk.
3. New volumes can be partitioned, this will allow us to have two partitions and act as separate tape.
4. The first partition is small as compared to that of the rest of the tape. The first partition contains the metadata required for the filesystem and other contains the actual data. The LTFS is currently supported with Linux & MAC OS. The LTFS tape when connected to the drive it will first load the metadata into the memory and after processing by the host os, the data partition will appear in the host os just with the drive letter. Now we can use it just like a normal filesystem. we can copy,delete and even modify the files.
5. Now my head started banging that how can we modify the data written into the Linear Tape. Obviously the data has to be written at the end of the tape. But somehow they manage to do it.
6. This indicates that the Tape will also preserve the older states of the filesystem and will write the changes to the end of it.It is snapshots but only for tapes.
7. LTFS requires LTO-5 Generation Tapes.
8. LTFS is open-source. :)
9. LTFS filesystem is very useful for tier-3 storage and archive storage, where single old file can be retrieved from the archive using LTFS reducing the overall recovery time.
10. Fuse driver needs to installed for some drives to work.
11. Drives needs to be formatted with LTFS file system.
